Gael Monfils v Gilles Simon Head to Head

These two have played each other 10 times but none since the 2017 Madrid Masters. And the head to head is a shocking 8-2 in favour of Simon, given the obvious difference in their rankings right now – Monfils is ninth in the world to his opponent’s 57th. Their previous meeting, at Madrid, was a stunner. Simon came back from losing the first set 6-0 to win the next 6-0 before the final set went into the tie-breaker which Simon won 7-0. Bizarre.

Monfils on a Rampage

The world number nine has played 11 matches this season so far and has won nine of them. This includes a five-match winning streak which saw him win the Montpellier Open last week and then a crushing 6-3, 6-2 win over Joao Sousa that brings him to this second round.

Monfils’ only two defeats have come at the hands of arguably the two best players of the season so far – Novak Djokovic at the ATP Cup and Dominic Thiem in the Australian Open.

What this says about Monfils’ showing thus far is lower-ranked opponents haven’t been able to hold a candle to the Frenchman so far, as he looks to carve a chance to regain his best ever ranking – he was once ranked sixth in the world. What needs to be seen is whether he is able to defend his title and retain those points he had won last year.

Simon Hunting for a Turnaround

Interestingly, speaking of Monfils’ best ranking of sixth in the world, it is no different for Simon. The difference is obviously in the manner in which Simon has slid down the charts, and enters this competition having not won even two matches in a row this year.

Even more interestingly, in the whole of 2019, Simon made it to just four tournament semifinals and none since the start of Wimbledon. In those last four months in 2019, there were just two occasions when he stitched together two wins in a row. He also huffed and puffed into the second round with a three-set win over Mikhail Kukushkin.

Which is why despite his stellar record against Monfils, there is no doubting the task on hand for him.

Gael Monfils v Gilles Simon Predictions & Tips

Monfils, despite losing eight times to Simon, will start off as a heavy favourite and we could see him notch up his third win against this opponent and sixth on the bounce this year.

Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
