John Isner v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The World No. 18 Isner has a perfect record against the 63rd-ranked Thompson, winning all three of their past contests, which included a straight sets win in the quarterfinals of the New York Open last year.

Isner Eyeing 16th ATP Title

It’s been a mixed start to the year for John Isner. Having lost all three of his matches at the ATP Cup, he reached the semifinals in Auckland. Then at the Australian Open he won the first two rounds before having to retire during the second set of the third round against Stan Wawrinka due to an injury.

But the 34-year-old has rarely been a threat in January, so he will be delighted to return to his backyard, where he has been the most successful. Thirteen of his 15 ATP title have come in the United States, clearly an indication of how much he loves to play on his country’s courts.

The 2018 Miami Open champion, Isner also reached the final of that tournament last year, but a foot injury spoiled his party against Roger Federer in the final.

The 6”10’ big-serving right-hander, who has been part of the longest and the second longest Grand Slam matches in history, is appearing at the New York Open for the third consecutive year and has been awarded a first round bye.

On Wednesday, Isner and partner Tommy Paul were knocked out of the doubles event by Dominic Inglot and Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi in straight sets in the Round of 16. The 2019 Hall of Fame Open champion, however, will be hoping for a better showing in singles, as he begins his quest for a 16th ATP title against Thompson on Thursday.

Tall Order For Thompson

Having safely negotiated the big booming serves of the 6″11′ Ivo Karlovic in the Round of 32, Jordan Thompson now runs into another giant in John Isner, also an expert in hitting aces.

On Tuesday, the unseeded Australian didn’t allow Karlovic to dictate terms. Restricting the Croat to just 11 aces, Thompson dominated the contest. Returning well, the Aussie converted one of his five break points to secure a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory.

This was Thompson’s second singles victory of the year. He was knocked out of the first round in Adelaide. Then at the Australian Open he won his first round match against Alexander Bublik in straight sets, but lost to Fabio Fognini in an entertaining five-setter, that saw him bounce back from two sets down before falling in the final set tie-break.

The 25-year-old right-hander, who reached a career-high ranking of 43 last year, is yet to win an ATP title. However, he could take one big step in that direction on Thursday if he can pull off an upset win over Isner.

John Isner v Jordan Thompson Predictions & Tips

Isner’s experience, his liking for American courts, and his dominance over Thompson all indicate that the American will be the favourite to win the contest. Expect him to win in two fiercely contested sets.
