Donna Vekic v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head
This will be the second time Vekic and Alexandrova will be facing off in a match, with the first match having gone Vekic’s way. That was at the Budapest Open and indoors as well, with Vekic winning in straight sets.
Vekic with a Mixed Start to 2020
A finalist at the 2019 edition of this tournament, Vekic hasn’t had the best of times this season. There was a first round loss at Brisbane, and she failed to win three matches in a row at both, the Adelaide International and the Australian Open.
At the Australian Open in particular she would have hoped to go deeper into the competition, but suffered a surprise loss at the hands of Iga Swiatek. Vekic had a reasonable first round win, a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kristie Ahn but her real test begins now as she takes on an opponent closer to her on the WTA charts.
Vekic will do well to remember her US Open run to the quarterfinal but indoors hasn’t quite been her most favourite conditions. Last season, which saw her hit her career-best ranking of 19th, also had her win and lose five matches apiece on that surface.
Alexandrova in Rousing Form
Having played the Fed Cup for Russia last week, Alexandrova won both her singles matches to help her country make it to the Finals. However, that hasn’t been the only crowning glory in Alexandrova’s season so far, as she won the title at Shenzhen Open earlier as well.
En route doing that, Alexandrova was a winner over Wang Qiang, Garbine Muguruza and Elena Rybakina. She followed it up with a third round appearance at the Australian Open but failed to overcome Petra Kvitova in that match.
That Kvitova defeat has been Alexandrova’s only one of the season so far, and while she needed three sets in the first round at St. Petersburg, she was able to see off Daria Kasatkina to set up this meeting.

It comes as very little surprise Alexandrova starts off a favourite with offer of 4/7 to win this one. And while Vekic has shown glimpses of solid play and is a higher-ranked player, we will have to go with this.
