Opelka Begins Title Defence in Style

Third seed Reilly Opelka began his title defence in style as he needed just an hour and 16 minutes to dispatch Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

The 6″11′ tall American, who served a staggering 156 aces in the tournament last year, was once again lethal with his serve, hitting 20 aces on his way to a 6-4, 6-4 win.

This was the first victory of the year for the World No. 40, who received a first round bye. Beginning the season in Adelaide, Opleka went down to Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in a thrilling three-setter, which saw the American squander three match points before bowing out of the first round encounter. Then at the Australian Open, a similar pattern followed. Opelka was up two sets to love against Fabio Fognini, but failed to close out the match as the Italian fought back to take the final three sets and advance to the second round.

Opelka, who along with compatriot Steve Johnson reached the semifinals of the doubles event on Wednesday, will be happy to have started off well in New York, but he will be up against a very tricky opponent in the quarterfinals.

Jung Yet To Drop A Set

New York brings the best out of Jason Jung. Having reached the quarterfinals of the tournament in 2019, the 131st-ranked right-hander has returned to the last eight stage this year on back of some scintillating performances.

Yet to drop a set in the tournament, Jung beat Americans Gary Kushnirovich and Mitchell Krueger in the first two qualifiers before upsetting the 6”8’ Kevin Anderson 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the first round. On Thursday, Jung picked up his sixth main draw win on Tour as he stunned seventh seed Cameron Norie on Britain 6-4, 6-4.

Not intimidated by taller opponents so far, Jung will, however, have his task cut out against the giant American in the quarters.

Reilly Opelka v Jason Jung Predictions & Tips

Jung’s enjoyed a fascinating run so far in the tournament. It will be interesting to see how well he handles pressure in the quarterfinal. Opelka, meanwhile, hasn’t been good in pressure situations this year. If the match goes the distance, the Asian will begin to sense his chances. However, expect Opelka to wrap this up in two sets.
