Kyle Edmund v Soonwoo Kwon Head to Head

Edmund Made Steady Progress This Tournament

Yep, two matches played and both won in straight sets by Edmund. These two wins against Yasutaka Uchiyama and Dominik Koepfer would have boosted some of the confidence of this former world number 14 because what had preceded wouldn’t have pleased the Brit too much.

Edmund had lost in the first round at Doha and then went down to Dusan Lajovic in his Australian Open opener as well. With just two wins at the Auckland Open to show for his efforts, there were question-marks around his form.

However, a couple of wins here on his maiden trip to the New York Open should be a good way heading into a busy few weeks ahead, especially as he looks to improve his ranking enough to get a direct entry into the Sunshine Masters.

Kwon With Surprise Raonic Win

Ranked just 22 spots behind Edmund at 94th, Kwon’s made a similar start to the year as Edmund. He went out in the first round at the Australian Open and then, having gotten himself an opening round bye in Pune, made the quarterfinals before losing to Egor Gerasimov.

Earlier he had featured in the Canberra Challenger where a quarterfinal is as far as he got.

Which is why when he overcome Milos Raonic in the quarterfinal, it would have come as a huge surprise to most. The match went the distance, with two of the three sets going to tie-breakers before Kwon got the all-important break in the final set and wrapped up the match.
