Kecmanovic Rallies To Beat Humbert
2019 NextGen ATP Finals semifinalist Miomir Kecmanovic fought back from a set down to defeat fourth seed Ugo Humbert of France in the first quarterfinal of the New York Open on Friday.
Showing better ability to wiggle out of tough situations, the World No. 54 needed an hour and 49 minutes to beat the 43rd-ranked Humbert 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The 6’0″ right-hander, who reached his first ATP final at the Antalya Open last year, saved 4 of 5 break points on Friday, while his opponent could save only 2 of 5 break points.
The 20-year-old Kecmanovic, who also reached the semifinals of the Qatar Open earlier this year, has been in good touch in New York. He started his campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over American Tommy Paul and followed that up with another easy win in the Round of 16, defeating Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets.
Up next for Kecmanovic is an opponent who himself had to fight back from a set down on Friday.

Given the form of South Korea’s Kwon Soon Woo and the way he raised his game to beat second seed Milos Raonic, it was pretty clear that things weren’t going to be easy for the eighth seed Briton in the quarterfinal.
And easy it wasn’t, as Edmund lost the first set 3-6. But the 62nd-ranked South African-born right-hander turned things around quickly in the second, forcing the decider that needed a nail-biting tie-breaker to separate the two.
In a match that lasted 2 hours and eight minutes, Edmund eventually prevailed 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to prevent Kwon from winning his third three-setter in a row.
The 6’2” Edmund, who reached the semifinal of the Australian Open two years ago, had dispatched Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama in straight sets in the first round before knocking out German Dominik Koepfer 6-2, 6-4 in the second.
Just two matches away from adding to the Estoril Open title he won in 2018, Edmund will be wary of the plucky Serb, who has made a steady progress ever since turning pro in 2017. In contrast, Edmund, who came to New York with a 2-3 record this season, was in woeful form for most parts of last season.

Both have had a similar route to the semis, breezing past the initial rounds and then having to dig deep to win their quarterfinals. Expect this semifinal to be a closely contested one as well, but given the recent forms, Kecmanovic should win this in straight sets.
