Jung’s Love Affair With New York Continues

Jason Jung scripted the best win of his career on the Tour on Friday when he knocked out defending champion Reilly Opelka in the quarterfinal of the New York Open.

Bouncing back from a set down, Jung defeated Opelka 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling one-hour-and-58-minute contest to enter the semifinals of an ATP Tour event for the first time.

The win was Jung’s seventh main draw victory on the Tour and his fifth in New York. The last year’s quarterfinalist notched up his fifth win on the trot on Friday having had to play the qualifiers to earn his place in the main draw this year.

The 30-year-old made short work of Americans Gary Kushnirovich and Mitchell Krueger in the first two qualifiers before causing three sensational upsets, beating Kevin Anderson 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the first round, seventh seed Cameron Norie of Britain 6-4, 6-4 in the second and then Opelka in the quarterfinal.

Facing Jung in the semifinal will be another player who wasn’t expected to have made this far in the tournament.

Seppi Rallies Past Thompson

Winning the first set in the last eight stage turned out to be a curse at the New York Open as all four of the quarterfinal matches followed a similar pattern with the player winning the first set going on to lose the contest in three.

The last of those matches on Friday saw Italy’s Andreas Seppi lose the first set in a tie-break against Jordan Thompson, before decimating the Australian in the next two sets to continue his sensational run in New York.

The two hour and 14 minutes contest saw Seppi convert four of eight break points and save two of three on his way to a 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-1 win. The victory also kept Seppi’s perfect record against Thompson intact, as he notched his third win over the Australian in just over one year.

Playing his fifth tournament of the year, the 2019 Sydney International finalist, defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 1-6, 6-7 (6-8) in the first round, and American Steve Johnson 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the second before beating the higher-ranked Thompson on Friday.

Jason Jung v Andreas Seppi Predictions & Tips

It was supposed to be an Isner-Opelka semifinal, but it didn’t go as per the script with both Americans failing to feature in the final four. However, the way Jung and Seppi have played in the tournament both deserved to have reached this far. It will be another cracking contest, with the experienced 35-year-old Italian expected to end the Asian player’s fairytale run in another three-setter.
