Garbine Muguruza v Kim Clijsters Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the two Grand Slam champions.

Muguruza Fell Short In Her Bid to Land Ultimate Prize in Melbourne

Garbine Muguruza has enjoyed a spectacular renaissance in the month of January, and ironically she admitted following her Australian Open final defeat to Sofia Kenin, that she never quite ‘disappeared’.

Although she fell short of the ultimate prize in Melbourne, there were a number of positives to take including a return to the world’s top-20. The power-hitting Spaniard was not seeded at the recently-concluded Australian Open, marking the first time such a scenario happened in a Grand Slam in over five years.

But after re-uniting with former coach Conchita Martinez on a full-time basis in 2020, a little bit of sorcery has been injected in her game and only time will tell whether her brilliant form in Melbourne was a one-off.

Muguruza is a two-time semifinalist in Dubai, and having been granted a wildcard this week, she will a join a star-studded field featuring the likes of Simona Halep, defending champion Belinda Bencic, and a surprise name who happens to be her first round opponent.

Clijsters, Set For Sensational Return to On-Court Tennis

In her ‘third act’ as the tennis pundits and community are calling it, Kim Clijsters is set to pick up a tennis racket and pits her wits against the very best on the WTA tour in her much-anticipated third installment this week.

Clijsters, the four-time Grand Slam winner, and a mother of three, made a stunning announcement last September that she would come out of retirement for the upcoming 2020 season. Her comeback was delayed due to knee injury, but she has since made a successful recovery and has been a handed a wildcard entry at the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

The is not the first time that the Belgian is making a return to tennis. In 2007, she underwent a short-lived retirement, before making a terrific comeback in 2009, winning three of her four majors during that stint until her second retirement in 2012.

Interestingly, it was in 2012 when Muguruza turned professional. The 36-year-old says a recurring inner feeling prompted her comeback, but how far does she intend to take it this time round?

Garbine Muguruza v Kim Clijsters Predictions & Tips

Clijsters’ return to action promises to be a baptism of fire having been handed a tough opener. The eyes of the tennis world will be glued to see how she fares in this one. Her movement, her serve, her strokes will be under scrutiny, but I don’t think there will be a lot of expectations on her to win this match. Expect Muguruza to record a routine win against the former world no.1.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 4/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
