Marketa Vondrousova v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head
This will be their second meeting with the first one having come at the previous edition of the French Open. Vondrousova had carved out a crushing 6-2, 6-0 win over Sevastova in that fourth round match on her way to the title-decider.
Vondrousova Aiming to Rebuild after Injury
Following her brilliant run to the final of the French Open last year – in which she managed to make it to the final – Vondrousova suffered a left wrist injury which needed surgery. That kept her out through most part of the second half of the season and her return to tennis this year has been a slow one as a result.
Vondrousova looked like she had shrugged off any rustiness when she dropped just three games on her way to the Adelaide International quarterfinal, but Ash Barty, who had beaten her in that French Open final as well, crushed her again in straight sets. And following on from that, Vondrousova lost back to back first round matches at the Australian Open and St. Petersburg Open as well.
Despite her sterling performance at Roland-Garros last year, it’s not like Vondrousova’s showing on hard court surfaces is usually underwhelming. Just last year alone she won nine of her 12 matches on hard court and was 4-1 indoors. Which is why these early jolts could be a case of getting used to post-surgery tennis against the top opponents on the WTA circuit. And in Sevastova, she has a difficult opposition alright, except for the Latvian’s form concerns.

Sevastova’s Won Just One Match But…
…that win was a record-making victory against Serena Williams.
It’s been that kind of a season for Sevastova, who has had the misfortune of getting drawn against some top opponents early in tournaments. At Brisbane, she was left with facing Sofia Kenin in her opener, at Adelaide, it was Donna Vekic in the first round and by the time she took on Ajla Tomljanovic at the Australian Open, her confidence seemed deflated. She lost that match 6-1, 6-1.
Sevastova then played Kenin again at the Fed Cup and when she was routed yet again, winning just four games in that match, it looked like her losing streak would extend to five matches by the next day. Because it was her second match at the Fed Cup then and it was against the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.
Williams was 1/8 to win the match and Sevastova edged her out in three sets and two tie-breakers to give Latvia hope. Unfortunately for the country, they lost the decider doubles but Sevastova might have taken a lot of confidence from that victory.

So much so, that despite Vondrousova starting off as a huge favourite at 4/11 we could see a lot closer fight here. This could get into the third set or see two fighting, two sets.
