Elina Svitolina v Jennifer Brady Head to Head
This will be the second meeting between the pair. Svitolina won in straight sets in their only meeting back in 2016 on the hard courts of Montreal.
Hot and Cold Svitolina Looking for Consistency
Svitolina has been struggling to put together a run of results so far this season. She has lost four out of her ten matches so far and all of them have come to opponents lower than her in the rankings. She is the third seed this week and will be looking to go deep in the tournament.
The 25-year-old Ukrainian won nine titles in 2017 and 2018 but kept getting knocked out in the later stages of the tournaments throughout 2019. She lost in one final, five semi-finals and six quarter-finals last season. Hailed as a future Grand Slam winner, she decided to add former men’s world number eight Marcos Baghdatis in her backroom staff this season.
She has had an excellent record at this event in her career. She has reached the semi-finals here in 2016 and 2019 and also been the winner in two years between that.
Qualifier Brady on an Impressive Run
The 24-year-old American started the season with an extremely impressive run at Brisbane international. She reached the last eight starting from the qualifying stage. She beat likes of Maria Sharapova and Ashleigh Barty in that tournament. That run helped her to break into the top50 rankings for the first time in her career. Currently ranked 52 in the world, she would be hoping to replicate such runs in many other events this year.
This week she has looked in decent form winning all of her three qualifying matches in straight sets. Although she hasn’t won a WTA title in her career and its been three years since her last ITF title, she did show some good form last season. She lost in the finals at the Indian Wells challenger and also reached the semi-finals at the Nottingham WTA.
This is her second appearance in Dubai, last year she reached the round of 16.

Svitolina has been battling minor injuries for a while now and that has affected her consistency. She will be finally looking to put a decent run this week to kick start her season. Brady, on the other hand, has been playing in a good rhythm in the qualifying stages and has it in her to trouble the Ukrainian. It is likely to be a close contest.
