Milos Raonic v Denis Istomin Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, and Raonic has won on each occasion, although their last match was back on clay in Lyon in 2017. In all those matches, Istomin has yet to win a set off the Canadian.

Raonic Looking to Respond to Challenge of Canadian Rivals

The 2016 Wimbledon finalist has been struggling for form and fitness recently, and it has been two years since he won the last of his eight ATP titles. In the intervening period, a new generation of Canadian players has begun to emerge, and his status as the country’s top players has been eclipsed by both Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime, whilst Vasek Pospisil has made a strong start to the season as well.

Now it is down to Raonic to respond, and, after beginning his season with a first round loss in Doha, he played very well in Melbourne, where he got to the quarter-finals, knocking out the number six seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, in the process, before he was beaten by the eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

However, last week at the New York Open, where he was also the number two seed, he went out at the first round stage, beaten by the South Korean Soonwei Kwon.

Istomin, an Experienced Uzbek Qualifier

Istomin is in his 16th year of his professional career, and was once ranked as high as 33 in the world, but is now well down outside the top 100. He has been in five ATP senior finals, the most recent of which was in Kitzbuhel, Austria in 2018, but the last of his two wins came a year earlier, in Chengdu, China.

These days he spends most of his time on the Challenger tour – this is the first time he has qualified for a senior ATP event this year.

He began his season in Bangkok, where he got to the second round, going one stage further in Newport Beach. Then he lost in the second round in Dallas, and failed to qualify for the New York Open last week.

He earned his place against Raonic, however, by coming through two rounds of qualifying, beating first Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, and then the American Noah Rubin.

Milos Raonic v Denis Istomin Predictions & Tips

Raonic is odds-on favourite to win this match against a man who has never even taken a set off him let alone beaten him, and who has now slipped well down the world rankings.

Tip: Raonic to win in straight sets: 8/15 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
