Petra Martic v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

This will be a first ever meeting between these two players.

Martic Fighting Her Inconsistency Demons

Petra Martic arrived in Dubai in worrying form. She had failed to secure back-to-back wins in 2020, losing in the second round of the ASB Classic in Auckland and the Australian Open last month. And last week at the Hua Hin Championships in Thaliand, she was upset by Chinese teenager Xiyu Wang in the first round in straight sets.

Martic’s downward spiral at the start of the year is in stark contrast to how she ended the previous campaign. She finished 2019 ranked inside the world’s top-20 for the first time in her career and she was destined to sail greater heights in 2020 given that she doesn’t defend a lot of points in the early quarter of this year.

But the Croat seems to be finding her feet this week, knocking out the peculiarly dangerous Hsieh Su-wei in the first round, to register her maiden main draw victory at the championships. She then proceeded to beat Barbora Stryvoca in the second round, making it the first time she had won two straight singles matches since Wuhan last September.

Kontaveit Edged Pavlyuchenkova in A Bruising Battle

This is now officially Anett Kontaveit’s best run at the Dubai Championships in her three tournament participation. The Estonian power-hitter needed to be every inch as good to tame the big-serving Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her second round match, overseeing six aces in 7-6, 7-5 win.

The 24-year-old has not dropped a set so far having also won her first match against Sorana Cirstea of Romania in straight sets, conceding just four games.

Kontaveit has fared fantastically well in 2020 after bringing her 2019 season to a premature end shortly after the US Open due to a bout of severe energy-sapping illness. She reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the very first time before she was taken out by Simona Halep.

Petra Martic v Anett Kontaveit Predictions & Tips

It is hard to look past Kontaveit here. Granted that Martic has had two super wins, but she is facing a significant upgrade in the Estonian next, and judging by how erratic she has been in 2020, expect her to falter.

Tip: Kontaveit to win in straight sets: 2/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
