Amanda Anisimova v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

This will be the first time between these two top-30 players and promises to be an exciting encounter.

Anisimova Looking to End Losing Streak

Having played at the Auckland Open as a preparation competition for the Australian Open, Anisimova looked like she had gotten off to a decent start. Wins in those first three matches took her to the semifinal where she met a rampaging Serena Williams and was sent packing 6-1, 6-1.

Strangely that was followed with two ordinary matches where Anisimova, while putting up a fight, did not win. She went down to Zarina Diyas at the Australian Open first round and then lost to Barbora Strycova at the WTA Dubai.

A week prior to the start of the Dubai Open, Anisimova had parted ways with her coach Carlos Rodriguez, a sign of things having not gone the way they would have liked. Rodriguez had come in as her coach following the sudden demise of her father who was her previous coach but now, as Anisimova who is still without one, things could take some time stabilising.

Alexandrova on a High

A third round defeat at the Australian Open almost sounded like a shock for Alexandrova who is 11-2 on win-loss this season. That Australian Open loss aside – and it came to Petra Kvitova no less – Alexandrova’s only other defeat was at the semifinal of the St.Petersburg Open to Kiki Bertens, who went on to win the title as well.

That defeat to Bertens was her last match and she now enters the Doha Open at her career-best of 25th in the world. Having never made it even to the main draw at the Doha Open, Alexandrova doesn’t have any points to defend here and that should push her ranking points up as well.

However, her draw here is a tough one. Even if she does manage to overcome Anisimova, and that won’t be easy, she has Elina Svitolina waiting for her in the second round and a possible match-up with Aryna Sabalenka in the third could follow.
