Stan Wawrinka v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

This will be the second match between the Swiss number two Wawrinka and American Tiafoe. In their first match which was played in Basel in 2019, Wawrinka had needed three sets to get past his opponent but that’s as far as he got in that tournament.

Wawrinka Returning after Australian Open

It’s been a steadily improving return for Wawrinka since last season when he made a comeback following his injury issue. He had made the European Open final then and while he lost to Andy Murray in that title-decider, the signs were always there.

And when he kick-started 2020 with semifinal at Doha, despite that defeat, Wawrinka looked like he was getting back to his best. Now, he might not have the weapons to beat the top three but he certainly showed what he did possess when the Swiss player reached the Australian Open quarterfinal.

In doing so, there were wins against John Isner and Daniil Medvedev – the latter even tipped to upset the Big Three apple-cart – before Wawrinka lost to Alexander Zverev. Even there, he took the first set off his opponent before Zverev grew into the match and won in four.

Wawrinka will now hope he can go deeper into this competition, although been placed in the same half as Rafael Nadal, there’s every chance he could meet his match there. For now though, he will hope to get past one of the Next Gen aspirants.

Tiafoe Looking for a Breakaway Tournament

Yep, Tiafoe is a Next Gen aspirant, a player who has been tipped to get into the top 10 of the rankings at some stage, sooner rather than later. He had even touched his career-best of 29th in the world last season but a string of failures following that has left him in the wilderness.

This season, Tiafoe has been steady without showing a lot of sparkle. Sure, there was a quarterfinal at the Delray Beach Open – a competition he had won as his maiden ATP title in 2018 – and before that he had also made the same stage at the Dallas Challenger. However, that aside, things haven’t looked so bright for the American.

A first round exit at Doha, Auckland and Australian Open looked to have only put a bigger question-mark on his immediate future before that slight turnaround in Dallas and Delray Beach. Still, his 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Ugo Humbert in the previous match he played might not help confidence and now facing a tough opponent first up makes things even more difficult for Tiafoe.

Stan Wawrinka v Frances Tiafoe Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka should win this in straight sets given the recent form of both, him and Tiafoe. Wawrinka’s rustiness will be the only question-mark and that is the one factor which could push this to a third set.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
