Nick Kyrgios v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

The 21st-ranked Kyrgios has never faced the 44th-ranked Humbert at any level before.

Humbert Coming off Delray Beach Semifinal

It was a bitter-sweet finish to Humbert’s previous campaign in Delray Beach. The Frenchman would have been expected to make it to the final there after having to face Yoshihito Nishioka in their last-four match and after having taken a first set lead those odds looked to have shortened dramatically.

Strangely, his game fell away after that and Humbert lost the next two 6-4, 6-0 to bow out of the competition. Still, he can take ample positives from the tournament, having beaten the likes of Miomir Kecmanovic and Frances Tiafoe before that match.

That was a much-needed boost for Humbert, who had started the season with a surprise, maiden ATP title win at Auckland but saw his form erode a little after that. Back to back opening round losses at Australian Open and Montepllier followed before he managed to win a match at the New York Open.

Again, he fell away in the second to Kecmanovic, but beating that very opponent in Delray Beach and in straight sets at that would have given him a lot of confidence.

Nick Kyrgios Returns to Defend Title

Kyrgios was supposed to play at the New York Open but withdrew from the competition because of a shoulder injury and then opted not to participate at the Delray Beach Open either.

The 24-year-old Aussie has not played since the 2020 Australian Open where he was knocked out in the fourth round match against Rafael Nadal. This had followed a stiff, five-setter that saw him eke out a thrilling win over Karen Khachanov.

Earlier in the year, Kyrgios had won three ATP Cup singles matches before losing to Robert Bautista-Agut in the semifinal where Australia got knocked out by Spain. He then crushed Grigor Dimitrov at the Kooyong Exhibition before the Australian Open.

He now returns to competitive tennis with a title to defend at the Acapulco Open.
