Sloane Stephens v Renata Zarazua Head to Head

This will be the first time ever Stephens and Zarazua will face off in any match at this level.

Stephens Returns from Month-Long Hiatus

The American last played a competitive match at the Australian Open and hasn’t featured in any matches since then, missing out on a few tournaments in the interim. It might have been to do with her lack of form and the need to get back into some kind of a rhythm off the court instead of the usual, play-lose-play regime week after week.

Because that’s how drastically wrong things have gone for the former US Open champion. Having won that title in 2017, she has added just one more tournament victory since – at Miami in 2018 – and went the whole of 2019 with a 24-19 win-loss record. As a result the former world number three fell to outside the top 30.

And the way this season has started out for Stephens, it looks like she needs a major turnaround. Starting her pre-season campaign in Brisbane, she lost her opener to little-known Ludmilla Samsonva, a player who has never seen the inside of the top 100 rankings. Another first round loss at Adelaide to Arina Rodionova followed and the story was worse. Rodionova is currently outside the top 150 and Stephens lost 6-2, 6-2 in that opener.

Which is why not much was expected out of Stephens heading into the Australian Open, and while she took the opening set against Shuai Zhang, she went out in the opener. Now, she has been blessed with a good draw, and as a top seed doesn’t play an opponent too strong till the quarterfinal. Can she turn things her way?

Zarazua Playing in the Lower Rung

The Mexican is a Fed Cup player for her country and has led her team to a few wins in the competition. Unfortunately her record at the highest WTA level isn’t much to write home about with Zarazua featuring at the lower, ITF circuit.

And even at those levels, Zarazua has just two titles under her belt, which she won way back in 2016.

Last season, she ended on a 39-26 win-loss record, having never won any of her main draw matches at this level. Her best performance in 2019 came at the $125k competition in Guadalajara, where she made the quarterfinals but that aside, her struggles on hard court finished with her at 6-7 on win-loss.
