Christian Garin v Gianluca Mager Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 23 year old Chilean, and the Italian, who is two years old than him.
Garin, Winner in Cordoba
At the start of last year, Garin was a comparatively unknown who qualified for his first Grand Slam in Melbourne. Yet, two months later, he reached his first ATP final in Sao Paolo, and, in April, clinched his first title, the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. The following month he won again in Stuttgart, and has already won his first title of 2020, and third in all, at Cordoba, earlier this month.
His progress to the final in Rio has not been entirely smooth. He had to come from a set down to beat the world 98 Andrej Martin of Slovakia in the first round, and, after a straight sets win over Federico Delbonis, was again tested by another Argentine, Federico Coria, dropping the first set before rallying to take the next two.
However, he saved his best tennis of the week for his semi-final, shrugging off the rain delays to beat the number five seed, Borna Coric of Croatia, in straight sets.
Mager, Italian Qualifier in First ATP Final
It was only last October at the Stockholm Open that the world 144 achieved his first main-draw ATP win, defeating the Spaniard Pablo Andujar. Barely five months later, he finds himself in a final. He must be pinching himself.
A clay court specialist who has spent the vast majority of his career on the ITF and Challenger tours, where he won three titles in 2019 – in Koblenz, Barletta, and Biella, Italy – he had no form to speak of coming into this tournament, and he had to come thorugh two rounds of qualifying just to take his place in the main event.
Gianluca Mager is in the final of a 500-point tournament, and he’s in tears on his chair.

He promptly achieved the best result of his career, defeating the Norwegian Casper Ruud, recent winner of the Argentina Open, in straight sets. After another straight sets win over Joao Domingues of Portugal, he produced a huge shock by knocking out the top seed and world number four Dominic Thiem, again in straight sets, a win that totally clipsed the victory over Ruud.
In his rain interrupted semi-final; he then out-lasted the Hungarian and fellow qualifier Attila Balazs, clinching the match on a third set tie-break..

It is a considerable achievement for the Italian to have got this far, but the fairy tale has to end some time. Garin has much more experience of p[laying in finals, knows how to win, and is equally comfortable on clay. He should win with ease.
