Aryna Sabalenka v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

This will be their second meeting with the first one having come in Wuhan in 2018. That was the final of the tournament and Sabalenka had won the title in straight sets, leaving Kontaveit with one WTA title in her kitty since.

Sabalenka Grappling to Find Her Feet

Other than Fed Cup, Sabalenka has played in four tournaments this year and not reached a single final. What was worse was her showing at the Australian Open, a first round exit at the hands of Carla Suarez Navarro leaving her with her second, opening round loss in three Grand Slam competitions.

With three titles under her belt including one at Shenzhen where she crashed out in the second round earlier this year, Sabalenka has a lot of catching up to. This is notwithstanding the semifinal in Adelaide where she had also beaten Simona Halep en route getting there.

Halep then had revenge in Dubai last week, going on to win the title in the process, but for Sabalenka who was ousted in the quarterfinal stage, it left more questions than answers. Positives, if any, from that competition in Dubai came in the form of wins over Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens before the Halep loss.

Kontaveit Attempting to Climb Back to Her Best

Once ranked 14th in the world, Kontaveit is now 22nd in the world, but she has had a solid start to her year. Her 12-4 win-loss record consists of four wins in the Fed Cup but two of those came against Camila Girogi and Elina Svitolina, two top opponents.

Other than that, Kontaveit is also coming off her best ever Grand Slam performance. Having first played at a major in 2014, Kontaveit had never reached the quarterfinal of any of the Grand Slams before the 2020 Australian Open. There were a couple of fourth rounds thrown in, in 2018 but she surpassed that when she shocked Belinda Bencic and then edged out Iga Swiatek in back to back matches to get there.

A quarterfinal appearance in Dubai, much like Sabalenka followed, and she then made it to the second here with a win over Anastasija Sevastova on Monday. Expect her to come into this second round encounter with confidence and form.
