Aryna Sabalenka v Saisai Zheng Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, with Zheng leading their head to head series by two matches to one. Zheng won in Zhuhai in 2017, and again last year in Stanford, en route to winning the Silicon Valley Classic. However, a few weeks later at the Cincinnati Open, it was Sabalenka who emerged victorious.

Sabalenka’s Second Win Over Sakkari in a Week

The winner of five WTA events, including the WTA Elite title last October, Sabalenka is on course to make her third semi-final of the year, having already got to that stage in Auckland, and, last week, in Dubai.

Her form has not been uniformly consistent – she was beaten by the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in Melbourne, and had her struggles playing for Belarus in the Fed Cup – but she is starting to get a solid history of wins behind her.

She benefitted from a walkover in the first round in Doha, but then was given a tough match by Anett Kontaveit, dropping the second set to the Estonian, before eventually progressing.

Sabalenka would have been expecting an equally tight match with her third round opponent, Maria Sakkari, the pair having met just a week ago in Dubai where she edged a three set contest. However, she caught the Greek having an off day and won in straight sets, losing just three games in the process.

Zheng Defeated In-Form Bertens

Prior to this event, Zheng, who was a beaten finalist in the doubles at the French Open last year, and whose win at the Silicon Valley Classic in California, was her maiden senior title on the WTA Tour, had not been in the best of form.

Her poor run begun in Melbourne, where she was beaten by Naomi Osaka, and continued through to Thailand and the Hua Hin Championships, where she lost to the Romanian Patricia Maria Tig, a played ranked 65 places below her in the world standings.

Then she failed to qualify for the Dubai tennis Championships altogether.

Her return to form in Qatar has been welcome, therefore. She began by beating Marketa Vondrousova, last year’s French Open finalist, and then the Russian Vera Zvonareva. On Wednesday, she then achieved her best result of the year so far, coming from a set down to beat the number seven seed, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, one of the form players at the moment.

Aryna Sabalenka v Saisai Zheng Predictions & Tips

Despite Zheng having the better head to head record, Sabalenka will start favourite for this match, given that she is in the better overall form in 2020, whereas her opponent had been struggling prior to this event.
