Stan Wawrinka v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

These two have played each other 11 times before this with Wawrinka holding a 7-4 advantage over his opponent. Wawrinka, however, is on a five-match winning streak against Dimitrov, with the Bulgarian’s last win against him having come in the 2016 Cincinnati Masters. Since then, Wawrinka has won at three Grand Slams and two Masters tournaments, including a tough three-set win at Cincinnati once again which went the distance.

Wawrinka Showing Good Fight This Season

A clinical showing from Wawrinka over Pedro Martinez saw him win his second round match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. This was after the Swiss number two had earlier faced trouble in the form of Frances Tiafoe, needing three sets and a tie-breaker in the final to get through his opener.

Wawrinka has been quite impressive this year, having shown late last season what he’s capable of when fully fit. Having made it to the final at the European Open, he was a semifinalist at the Doha Open earlier this year. While he suffered a surprise loss at the hands of Corentin Moutet in that match, it looked to have allowed him enough match-time and boosted enough confidence to get into the Australian Open.

And it was at that first major of the year, Wawrinka showed his full extent of good form, as he defeated Andreas Seppi, John Isner and then Daniil Medvedev in successive matches to make the quarterfinals. Wawrinka was leading by a set against Alexander Zverev in the last-eight match before the German took control and sent him on his way.

However, a month later, Wawrinka is back and winning again.

Dimitrov Comes Through in a Thriller

There were times in his second round match against Adrian Mannarino, Dimitrov looked like he should have no issues going through. There were other times when he looked down and out. And then finally in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes, Dimitrov came through in a tough three-setter, winning 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Dimitrov also faced two match points, saved both of them and overcame his poor record in the final set tie-breakers, to set up this meeting with Wawrinka. Having lost four of these tie-break in the third set, Dimitrov notched up his sixth win of the season, to go with his four losses and made it to his first 2020 quarterfinal.

He was 4-2 up in the first set but was broken back and then had a set-point in the tie-breaker at 8-7 before Mannarino won three points in a row to close the set. In the final set, Dimitrov was 4-1 up again and then lost four games in a row before Mannarino had a couple of match-points of his own. Dimitrov saved both, took the match into a tie-breaker and finally closed out easily.

Stan Wawrinka v Grigor Dimitrov Predictions & Tips

Interesting to note the last time Wawrinka and Dimitrov met the match had gone into a final set tie-breaker, and Dimitrov is coming off something similar here. Could see another fighting match which goes to three sets.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 7/5 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
