Rafael Nadal v Taylor Fritz Head to Head
The pair have never played each other once. This will be the first meeting between the world number two, and the American currently ranked 33 places below him.
Nadal’s First Final of 2020
This is Nadal’s first final of 2020, although that should be put into context – the only other two competitive events he has entered has been the ATP Cup, where he helped Spain reach the final, and the Australian Open, where he got to the last eight, only to lose to Dominic Thiem.
Winner of this title twice before, in 2005 and 2013, the Spaniard has simply cruised through the week, reeling off a series of straight set wins. H began with a match against Pablo Andujar who he brushed aside, before beating Miomir Kecmanovic, the Serb at least having the consolation of taking five games off him in the second set, better than anybody else has managed.
The South Korean Kwon Soon-woo was ruthlessly dispatched, and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria scarcely detained him longer in their semi-final, taking just five games in total of a man who is hunting for his 85th ATP career title.
Fritz, Re-discovered His Form in Acapulco
Fritz came into this tournament looking to find some form after a poor start to the year. After a 2019 which saw him reach three finals in a purple patch in the middle of the season, winning his first ATP title in Eastbourne, he was hoping to consolidate that progress.
However, a string of early defeats in tournaments then ensured, with his previous best coming in Melbourne, where he beat Kevin Anderson en route to the third round, only to lose to Dominic Thiem.
However, he has put together a string of impressive performances in Acapulco, beginning in the first round where he overcame the challenge of the experienced Australian, John Millman, in three sets. He then had straight sets wins over the rising young French star, Ugo Humbert and Britain’s Kyle Edmund, winner of the title in New York, to earn himself a semi-final meeting with compatriot and number five seed John Isner.
Fritz lost the first set, and, in the second, was losing 2-4 and was 40-0 down on his own service. Yet, he rallied from there to take five out of the next six games to level the match, and then decisively broke the Isner serve in the middle of the third set to earn himself a spot in the final.

When Nadal is in this mood, it is hard to imagine who can stop him, and certainly nobody in the field in Mexico has the quality to be able to live with him. This may be a two horse race, but few can be found prepared to back Fritz.
