The pair have never met each other on the tour so far. This will be the first-ever meeting between both the French players.
Mladenovic Continues Her Poor Record on Hard Courts
The 26-year-old Frenchwoman achieved her career-best ranking of 10 back in 2017. That was on the back of a title at Saint Petersburg along with three other finals at Acapulco, Stuttgart and Madrid. She also reached the quarter-finals of the French Open. But most of her notable performances had come on the clay courts and her season fell off the cliff post-summer. She lost 15 out of the last 18 matches of the season.
Her poor record on the hard courts troubled her last year as well. She lost more matches on the surface then she won last season. Currently ranked 39 in the world, Mlandenovic started this season with three early-round exits.
She reached the second round in Brisbane but went out in the opening round at the Australian Open and Saint Petersburg. She did perform better in Dubai where she won four matches starting from the qualifying stage but once again in Doha she crashed out in the first round.
This week she would be eager to perform better in front of her home crowd. Even though the tournament is going to be played on the indoor hard courts she will be hoping to go deep in the tournament considering that she is the second seed at the event.

Wildcard Paquet Aiming for Rare Main Draw Win
The last time Paquet won a WTA main draw match was in July last year where she reached the quarter-finals at Jurmala, Latvia. She reached her highest ever ranking of 145 after that tournament. Since then she has reached the main draws of WTA events on four occasions but has failed to get past the first hurdle.
The 25-year-old is best known for upsetting the world number 44, Kristyna Pilskova in the 2017 French Open first round. She was world number 260 at the time and her win over the Czech player was one of the bigger upsets of the first round at Roland Garros that year.

Mladenovic has a poor record on the hard courts and it doesn’t get better when the surface is indoors. But she should get a comfortable win over her fellow French player. The wait for Paquet to win a WTA main draw match is likely to continue.
