Johanna Konta v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 28-year-old British player, and the Russian teenager, ten years her junior.

Konta Slowly Finding Form in Mexico

Konta is slowly regaining some confidence after a tough start to the year. The world number 16 had lost all three of the previous matches she had played in 2020 prior to Monterrey – beaten in the first round in Brisbane, Melbourne, and then St. Petersburg, and was struggling to manage a long-standing knee injury.

Yet she overcame the challenge of the Belgian Kim Clijsters in the first round, beating the former world number one and multiple Grand Slam winner in straight sets in what turned out to be a battle of the serve.

And she was able to come through another difficult match against another big server, Tatjana Maria, on Thursday night, although it took her nearly two hours to seal another straight sets victory over the German. The first set was very tight, and, with neither serve being broken, went to a tie-break, which Konta eventually won.

The second set was equally tight, but then Konta forced a break in the second and went on to close out the match. Maria had pushed her hard – she served 11 aces, and saved 11 of the 12 break points she faced – but Konta will have been glad to have emerged victorious.

Potapova’s Third Quarter Final in Succession

Potapova is a former junior world number one, and won the Girls’ singles at Wimbledon in 2016, beating the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in the final.

The 18 year old has yet to win on the senior WTA tour, but has twice been a finalist, at the Moscow River Cup in July 2018, and, a few months after that, at the Tashkent Open.

Potapova had a difficult start to the season in Australia, where she failed to qualify for either Brisbane or Australia, and lost in the first round in Melbourne, beaten in straight sets by Serena Williams.

However, she then came through qualifying to make the main draw in St. Petersburg, and got to the quarter finals before losing to the eventual winner, Kiki Bertens. Last week she got to the quarter finals again in Acapulco, only to be beaten by fellow teenager, the Canadian Leylah-Annie Fernandez.

And now she has reached the same stage for her third successive tournament, after two three set wins over Giulia Gatto-Monticone of Italy, and the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek.
