Daria Kasatkina v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between Kasatkina and Friedsam, with the Russian having both the previous matches. However, both matches came in 2016, at the French Open and Indian Wells Open.

Kasatkina in First Semi Since 2018

Since making the second round of the Auckland Open, which was her first tournament of the year, Kasatkina hadn’t won a single main draw match this year. There were five wins in the qualifiers, but first round losses at Adelaide, Melbourne and Doha meant the former world number 10 was entering this competition with a lot to prove.

She has gone a few steps beyond in this tournament. A first round win at the Lyon Open against Pauline Parmentier in three sets would have provided her that confidence before a straight-set win against Irina Bara took her to the quarterfinal.

Camila Giorgi was expected to give Kasatkina, which is how it went, with the match going into three sets. She won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to seal her semifinal berth. This is Kasatkina’s first semifinal since her Moscow Open last-four entry in 2018, speaking volumes of the importance of the result.

The last time she made the semifinal of a WTA competition was also the last time she went on to win the title. Can she get to the final here in the first place?

Friedsam in a Rare Semifinal Showing

Ranked 136th in the world, Friedsam was stretched to three sets in her quarterfinal by Viktoriya Kuzmova but a win meant she had done something similar to Kasatkina. Much like the Russian, she hadn’t won a main draw match this season at the WTA circuit, having participated in two ITF competitions after her Australian Open qualifier defeat.

She was fortunate enough to be drawn to play Anastasiya Komardina in her opening round, an opponent ranked outside 200 on the WTA rankings. However, there was nothing fortunate about her second round opponent, Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, who was the second seed in the competition.

Friedsam registered a crushing 6-3, 6-3 victory over her to pull off a rare quarterfinal berth before edging past Kuzmova in the last-eight. What that does is to see Friedsam in her first WTA semifinal since 2016, which is a solid ‘win’ on its own.
