Tennis News Today: WTA Guadalajara Cancelled after Coronavirus Outbreak [Updated]

Magda Linette v Aliaksandra Sasnovich tips & predictions WTA US Open 2023

Edit: The WTA Guadalajara has now been cancelled after the initial plan to hold the tournament with an expanded draw.

Original article:

With the WTA Indian Wells Open cancelled because of the outbreak of the coronavirus, the WTA tour has moved in to expand the WTA Guadalajara draw to 56 players, adding 24 more to the originally-planned 32.

The Guadalajara Open is a WTA $125k competition that will be played from March 15, and will now see the top eight seeds get a bye into the second round. 36th-ranked Magda Linette is the top seed in the tournament and she will be joined by the likes of Rebecca Peterson, Monterrey Open finalist Marie Bouzkova and Fiona Ferro among the others.

Also featuring in the tournament are Alison van Uytvanck, Jil Teichmann, Laura Siegemund and Aranxta Rus. Eugenie Bouchard is one of the players to have received a wild-card for the Guadalajara Open too.

There is no change to the doubles draw though which has 16 teams participating in the tournament.

With the Indian Wells Open having been postponed from earlier this week this expanded draw helps few of the players who were left without a tournament to participate in. The one other concern now will be the use of practice facilities but a few of these players would have already been able to avail of the facilities back in Indian Wells after that tournament was suspended.

The tournament in Guadalajara was to begin on Monday but it’s been advanced by a day now.

Quite a few of the lower-level competitions on the women’s circuit have also been cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak. As have the Xi’an Open and Kunming Open in China, two of the WTA $125k tournaments which were to be played in April.

Other than the Indian Wells Open, the Fed Cup Finals and Playoffs, scheduled for April have been postponed to a later, undecided date.
