Kazakh player Yaroslava Shvedova has been put in quarantine after travelling in the same flight as a coronavirus-infected patient.
Shvedova, who has been away from tennis and played just one match this season, was returning back home in Kazakhstan following the cancellation of the WTA Indian Wells Open.
As a result, she will now face a mandatory quarantine for a period of two weeks, further delaying her reuniting with her family, which includes one-year-old twins.
In a post on Instagram, Shvedova said:
“Hello everyone from the quarantine! Many people in Kazakhstan probably heard about the flight from Moscow to Nur-Sultan on March 12th and that on that flight there was a passenger flying from Milan who had a coronavirus.”
“So I was on that flight, flying home to my family from California after Indian Wells was canceled. Not long after arrival I was placed in stationary quarantine like all passengers of that flight.”
Shvedova, a two-time Grand Slam doubles winner, hadn’t played at the competitive level before this year since 2017. She featured in her first match since her first round loss at the French Open in 2017 earlier this year in Doha.
She lost her opener and was expected to participate in Indian Wells before the tournament became the first tennis competition to get cancelled because of the coronavirus.
Multiple tennis tournaments have been cancelled since including the Miami Open, Bogota Open, Charleston Open, Stuttgart Open and at Guadalajara.
