Tennis News Today: All Tennis Suspended Till July End

There will be no Hamburg Open this year

It hasn’t come as too much of a surprise with the ATP and WTA officials deciding to push the suspension of all tennis till July 31.

As a result of this, tournaments like the ATP 500 event in Hamburg and WTA tournaments in Bastad, Bucharest, Lausanne and Jurmala have all been cancelled.

The WTA Rogers Cup, which was to be played in the first week of August, has already been postponed as well, given the Canadian government orders over the coronavirus-related lockdown.

ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said:

“Just like tennis fans, players and tournament hosts all over the world, we share in the disappointment the tour continues to be affected in this way.”

“We continue to assess all of our options in an effort to resume the tour as soon as it is safe to do so, including the feasibility of rescheduling events later in the season.”

What now remains to be seen is if the US Open, which has been slated to be held towards the end of August, will be played as scheduled. The US Open authorities had said there were multiple options still open but they would take the final decision regarding this in June.

Wimbledon took an early decision to cancel the competition this year while the French Open was postponed to one week after the US Open but the chances of it happening are receding by the day.

As a result of this, one can expect a lot more interest in tennis tournaments like the Generali Pro Series tennis exhibition, Tipsport Charity Cup and Tennis Point Exhibition Series with the first two expected to star Dominic Thiem, Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova in the competitions.

These competitions have been organised by respective countries along with a few other proposed in Great Britain as well. Reports suggest there is a proposal in the UK to bring back the National Championships this year for the first time in 18 years. If the plan does go ahead, it would see British stars like Andy Murray and Dan Evans feature in a competition against each other.
