Thiem was tested by Serbia’s Krajinovic, who took him to a tie-breaker in the first set before levelling the match at a set apiece. In the final set, Thiem completed a 4-2 win to clinch the match and the title 4-3, 2-4, 4-2 to lift the title.

The Austrian world number three admitted playing in the Generali Pro Series back home over the past couple of weeks had helped his game but the atmosphere in Belgrade was nothing like this.

Calling it the perfect weekend, Thiem also added:

“I’m happy with the level I played this week. I’ve been fully in practice for quite a while – I played seven matches in Austria. But I have to say, it’s something very different with the big crowd.”

Having begun the day with a 2-0 win-loss record from the opening sessions, Thiem went on to complete his third victory in the league stage of the competition. He defeated Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets to enter the final with a clean record to enter the final.

In the other group, Krajinovic, who had started the day with a 1-1 record after defeating Djokovic and losing to Alexander Zverev on day one, overcame Viktor Troicki to end the league stages with a 2-1 win-loss record.

Djokovic also won his final group stage match against Zverev, who had earlier won both his opening matches to finish with a similar, 2-1 record on the standings. However, Krajinovic’s better games win percentage helped him sail through to the final.

Among others, Krajinovic had a good weekend of tennis too, finishing runner-up at an event which had Thiem, Djokovic and Zverev.

He had earlier gotten past Djokovic in three sets and then defeated Viktor Troicki, allowing him to end the league stages at the top of the table because of a better games differential than the other two.
