Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have given indications about what their near-term tennis plans are despite the obviously different situations they find themselves in.

Nadal, who is the defending French Open and US Open champion, has added the Madrid Masters in his list of tournaments he will participate in this year.

And with the Madrid Masters to be played in the two-week gap between the two Grand Slams, it puts a question-mark over his participation in the US Open.

The US Open is scheduled to end on September 14, while the clay court competition in Madrid will be played the week following the US Open according to the updated ATP schedule for 2020.

The final Grand Slam of the year will be played at Roland-Garros, a week after the completion of the Madrid Masters. It’s difficult to see Nadal competing in three big competitions spread across those five weeks.

And given his track record at the French Open, if it comes down to choosing between that and participating at the US Open, the choice would be quite obvious.

Nadal had earlier said he wasn’t sure of taking part at the US Open and this decision to play in Madrid might prove to be another clue about the same.

Meanwhile Federer admitted he has thought of retirement but for now is happy to go on and even play in the tennis at Tokyo for the Olympics 2021.

Speaking at the launch of “The Roger”, a sneaker with On, Federer said:

“My goal is to play Tokyo 2021. It’s a wonderful city. I met my wife in my first Olympics in 2000. It’s a special event for me.”

Giving an update on the surgery he has recently had on his knee, Federer added:

“I had two surgeries and I can’t hit at the moment, but I’m very confident I will be totally ready for 2021.”
