The tennis comeback was dealt a blow when one of the premier tournaments scheduled to be played in August was cancelled. The men’s Washington Open, which had been scheduled for the coming month, announced it won’t be happening this year.

This tournament was supposed to be the first one on tennis’ return following the coronavirus pandemic according to the revised tennis schedule.

However, the organisers announced there were still issues with international travel and with the pandemic still showing increasing trend in the country, it was going to be difficult to get a decent event in.

According to a report in the New York Times, the Washington Open chairman Mark Erin said the trend of cases had changed between the time they had agreed to host the tournament and now.

He added:

“Then we ran out of time. With a little more time we may have been able to overcome the obstacles that were in front of us, but it’s better to make a decision for all the stakeholders before it gets to the last minute.”

The big question now is whether the other tournaments planned for August will go ahead as scheduled.

Following the Washington, the women’s Lexington Open is expected to see Serena Williams participate in the tournament, which will be followed by the Western & Southern Open. The latter is typically played in Cincinnati but its venue has been changed to New York now.

This cancellation also puts a question-mark over the US Open which is supposed to start on August 31.
