Camila Giorgi v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

This will be their third meeting and both Giorgi and Peterson have won one apiece so far. Both those matches came in 2019 and on hard court surfaces, so a match here on clay makes it that much more exciting.

Giorgi won their second round match in Washington while Peterson was up by a set in Wuhan when the Italian withdrew from the competition because of an injury.

Giorgi Aiming to Claw Back into Top 30

A quarterfinal appearance at the 2018 Wimbledon was followed by the Italian catapulting into her highest WTA ranking of 26th in the world that year. Unfortunately for her, she hasn’t been able to retain that kind of form although she did make it to the third round at both, the 2019 and 2020 Australian Open.

The issue lies with her lack of titles on the WTA tour with her Linz Open win in 2018 being her last such victory. A first round exit in Auckland earlier this year, a failure to qualify for the Hobart International, and after a brief resurrection in Melbourne, losses during the qualifiers at Doha and Dubai have made it tougher for Giorgi.

The Italian ended the pre-pandemic season with a couple of wins in Lyon but suffered a surprise loss to an equally struggling Daria Kasatkina. Since then she hasn’t played any tennis which could make it slightly tougher for Giorgi.

The Swede is currently 44th in the world following on from a season to remember in 2019. She won her maiden WTA title in Nanchang and doubled her tally with another victory at Tianjin, closing out the year on a high.

Unfortunately for Peterson, a lack of solid results at Grand Slams meant she couldn’t break into the top 30 but it looked like this could have been a breakthrough year, especially on hard court surfaces.

While the pandemic put paid to those plans, Peterson would also be slightly surprised by her showing in the first couple of months. She lost three back to back opening round matches, including one at the Australian Open and her only wins came in the first two rounds of the Monterrey Open early in March.

With clay not being a particularly favourite surface for Peterson, and without any competitive practice under her belt for a while, she might have to climb a mountain here.

Camila Giorgi v Rebecca Peterson Prediction & Tip

Both players start off at 5/6 to win this match, which basically means it’s too close to call. We are tipping Giorgi to edge this one thanks to her better experience over the years.

Tip: Girogi to win: 13/8 (bet365)
