This will be the first time Errani takes on Pliskova in a competitive match.
Errani Edges Out Cirstea in a Battle of Strugglers
We had mentioned how much of a struggle it has been for Italian former world number five Errani in recent times. Her ranking, not surprisingly, has fallen to 167th in the world and with a 29-31 win-loss record since the start of 2019, it looked like Errani would struggle starting out here.
Fortunately for Errani, her first round opponent, Sorana Cirstea, was in an equally big soup and the Italian won a battle of two strugglers. She came through in three sets, clinching it 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Pliskova.
That was Errani’s first win since her opening round victory in Acapulco following which she had lost three matches in a row on hard court. Clay, however, has been her favourite and even in the previous season when form had been a concern, Errani won more than she lost on that surface – making her a stiff opponent, at least for someone not very highly-ranked.

Not too many gave Pliskova a chance in her opening match against Maria Sakkari but we did think her experience of playing in exhibition tournaments during the break would come handy. And that’s exactly what happened.
In fact she did better than what we had imagined, winning her opening round match against Sakkari in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
That victory came on the back of five wins in the Tipsport Elite Trophy competition held in July on clay, and having played nine matches in all on clay.
What Pliskova would hope now is for a Shenzhen 2020-like run here, where she surprised Aryna Sabalenka to make it to the semifinal. On clay, Errani will prove to be a tougher opponent but Pliskova has the confidence going her way.

Pliskova is 2/5 to win this but we don’t expect it to be a straightforward win. A three-setter could be the order of the day with Pliskova expected to edge it.
