Ekaterina Alexandrova v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head
This will be the third meeting between these two Russians and both have won one apiece. The first match came last year in Beijing where Kasatkina won in straight sets before Alexandrova avenged that defeat with a win this year in a St. Petersburg opener.
Alexandrova Hopes to Better Clay Record
Alexandrova, ranked 27th in the world, which is just two spots below are career-best, has not had the best record on clay in recent times. While she did well at the lower tiers, the step-up hasn’t quite been much to write home about.
Last year, for instance, she won just three of the 10 matches she played on clay, and those defeats included losses in the qualifiers at Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome. She did defeat Samantha Stosur at the Australian Open but tumbled out in the third round of that competition.
Earlier this year, Alexandrova had featured in a couple of exhibition tournaments on clay too, but won just two of the six matches she played in. She did win her opening round match at the Palermo Open where she overcame Kristina Mladenovic in three sets but then went down to the eventual finalist Fiona Ferro in round two.

Kasatkina’s Rut Continued in Palermo
Having reached a career-best ranking of 10th in the world, Kasatkina didn’t last in that top bracket too long. The fall in the rankings came over the last season and a half in which she has won just 22 matches and lost 29 of them.
On clay, last year she was 4-4 and this year, her only match on the surface resulted in a defeat. That loss came in Palermo earlier this week when she went down in the first round to Jasmine Paolini.
After winning the first set in that match, Kasatkina lost 6-4, 6-4, crashing out of an opener for the fifth time this season. It will be a tough ask to get out of her rut, but given Alexandrova’s poor clay record, this could Kasatkina’s chance.
