Simona Halep v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between Halep and Begu and the Romanian world number two leads the head to head 6-0. Yep, six played and Halep’s won all six. What’s even more distressing is Halep has dropped just one set across those six matches to Begu, and that came in Madrid in 2016, which was also one of the three matches on clay she beat Begu on.

Halep Gets into Rhythm

After starting out the competition having not played a single match since the last week of February 2020, Halep had to fight her way through to the last-eight.

To begin with, she needed a final set tie-breaker to win her opening round match against Polona Hercog, and then dropped the first set of her second round match against Barbora Krejcikova. Halep, however, is a champion player and that was on display in that encounter too as she came back to win the next two sets and seal her quarterfinal berth.

Now fully into rhythm, Halep wasted no time in her quarterfinal against Magdalena Frech, dropping just two games en route a straight-set drubbing of her opponent. For someone playing in her first tournament in nearly six months and the first clay court competition of the year, her return to form has been rather pleasant to watch.

Now she takes on an opponent who shouldn’t be too much of an issue either.

Begu Turns Things Around

Ranked 82nd in the world at the moment, Begu had lost in the first round of the tournament at Palermo last week and wasn’t expected to go too far here either. However, it does look she has turned things around to an extent.

First she surprised Anastasija Sevastova in the first round, making it a double shocker by doing it in straight sets. Leonie Kung wasn’t expected to be too much of a match in their second round encounter but it went into three sets with Begu needing to come back on a multiple occasions in that one.

She finally won the final set tie-breaker 9-7 to advance to the quarterfinal where she met Sara Sorribes Tormo. Begu was up by a set on Friday before the match had to be suspended because of bad light and when it resumed earlier today, she lost the second set.

However Begu responded well in the final set and clinched it 6-2 to seal her seventh meeting with Halep.
