As we had predicted in the previous match Herbert played, there was some rustiness but more vitally he was up against a player who had the tenacity to shock. In the end, Herbert’s experience shone through and he won in three sets after losing the first set.
Having featured in a few matches during the pandemic break was probably the difference between losing and winning that second round encounter for Herbert. He struggled to get used to his opponent in the opening set but once Herbert had the measure of Jonas Forejtek, it became a lot easier for him.
Earlier in the year, Herbert hadn’t played a single match on clay either, and while his record on clay isn’t too poor – he was 11-7 last season – it might take him a couple of matches to get in full gear on this surface. Now he faces a 228th-ranked player in round three.

Kolar Has Played A Lot on Clay This Year
Kolar has never seen the inside of the top 200 rankings in the world, having had a career-best of 208th in the singles charts. However, take nothing away from the way he has played in the tournament so far.
In his first round, Kolar was up against the 624th-ranked Petr Nouza and he did not sweat too much getting the better of him, winning 6-2, 6-1. It was in the second round that Kolar was expected to face some kind of a fight since he was facing the 163rd-ranked Sebastian Ofner.
Ofner had a first round bye and while he wasn’t rusty by any stretch given the number of matches he had played during the break, he proved to be a very little match for Kolar. Kolar came through in straight sets 7-6, 7-5.
Now comes the real test for Kolar but with an 18-5 win-loss record on clay this season, we wouldn’t be discounting him too easily.
