Roberto Bautista Agut v Richard Gasquet Head to Head
Bautista-Agut and Gasquet have a solid rivalry which dates back to 2014 and in the ensuing years they have played each other seven times. Bautista-Agut has won five of those seven times, but rather curiously one of those two Gasquet wins came at the Western & Southern Open last year. These two had made it to the quarterfinals and Gasquet went one better.

The Spaniard has played in a few competitions across Europe during the pandemic lockdown. This included the Thiem’s 7 where he was a semifinalist, and the Bett competition indoors where he lost both his matches but will now be featuring for the first time in an ATP tournament since Dubai Open in February.
Bautista-Agut had made a sterling start to the season earlier this year when he went on a winning rampage at the ATP Cup. He defeated the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Dusan Lajovic to help Spain almost win the tournament before Novak Djokovic wove his magic against Rafael Nadal.
Six matches played, Bautista-Agut won them all.
Unfortunately for the Spaniard, the form did not continue post that. He made the third round at the Australian Open when he was expected to do a lot more being the quarterfinalist in that major in 2019, before falling away in the second and first round at Rotterdam Open and Dubai Open.
Gasquet Eases into Round Two
Playing American qualifier Jeffrey Wolf in the opening round of this competition, Gasquet did not have too much trouble getting past him and sealing his second round berth. He won 6-4, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Bautista-Agut.
Before that, Gasquet had spent a considerable amount of his pandemic break in participating in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, featuring in both the editions and giving a fairly solid account of himself.
And that was much needed because of the manner in which former world number seven’s season had gone. Having missed the entire January because of fitness woes, Gasquet then lost in the quarterfinal of the Montpellier Open and Dubai Open while crashing out in the first round of the Marseille Open.
While his semifinal berth last year at this tournament has ensured he is more or less going to neither gain, nor lose points (unless he at least enters the final!), Gasquet will hope to push on with the momentum leading up to the US Open.

Bautista-Agut starts off an overwhelming favourite at 1/2 despite his loss to Gasquet in Cincinnati last year. We expect him to win too but not before some fight as he looks to get some of the adrenaline going at the highest level.
