Victoria Azarenka v Alize Cornet Head to Head
This is a shockingly one-sided rivalry. These two have met six times before this encounter and Azarenka has won every single time. Some of those wins came at Azarenka’s peak while others have been more recent matches like the 2019 Wimbledon where the Belarusian clinched their first round match 6-4, 6-4.

After months of personal upheaval, Azarenka had come into this tournament without too many expectations, especially from her fans. Here was a former Grand Slam winner who had fallen down the ranking charts, played just one WTA match before the pandemic break, and one after it, both of which she lost in the first round.
For someone, who held a win-loss record of 72-7 on hard court in a period between 2012 and 2013, it would have been painful to see her fall to defeats as regularly as she has in recent times.
Which is why these two wins in the opening couple of rounds in the Cincinnati Open, would not just be a relief for Azarenka but also a warning to her opponents she still belongs. What makes these two wins special is the manner and the opponents.
In the first round Azarenka crushed Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 before defeating Caroline Garcia in the second in another straight-setter. And it would have been another one-sided match against Garcia had Azarenka not lost bit of steam towards the end, when she let a 5-2 lead in the second set slip away before winning it in the tie-breaker.

Cornet Stuns Kenin
Cornet has been testing herself out on hard court surfaces over the past few months and that clearly seems to have helped her. Since bowing out of the Lyon Open before the pandemic hit the sport, Cornet has participated in four tournaments and played 14 matches.
While her performances have been modest, it has helped ready herself for this competition in New York and the results so far are showing.
She was bit of a favourite in her opening round match against Catherine McNally but up against the Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin, not too many expected the Frenchwoman Cornet to last too long.
Cornet stunned the second seeded Kenin 6-1, 7-6 which interestingly had traces of the Azarenka match in it. The first set was a dawdle and in the second set, Cornet led 5-2 with a couple of match points but Kenin came back strongly to take the set into a tie-breaker.
Fortunately for Cornet, she held her nerve and fought her way to seal a third round place.
