Daniil Medvedev v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

This will be the second time playing against each other between Medvedev and the 12th-ranked Bautista-Agut at a competitive level. Their first meeting came at the 2017 Chennai Open, now called the Pune Open, and that title-decider was won by Bautista-Agut in straight sets.

Things have changed around dramatically for Medvedev since then, who has won seven ATP titles between 2018 and 2019.

Medvedev Playing Like a True Defending Champion

There was that obvious worry for Medvedev coming into this tournament he would be under-cooked and under-prepared for it. After all, he hadn’t stepped on to the court for a competitive match during the pandemic break, opting not to participate in a single exhibition tournament in that time frame.

The rest was well-deserved too with Medvedev having played an unbelievable amount of tennis towards the end of the previous season and showing signs of bit of jadedness in this new season. He had still won four of his five matches at the ATP Cup, before he lost to Novak Djokovic, and while he made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open, the Russian had lost to Stan Wawrinka there.

A first round defeat at Rotterdam would have been hard to take as was the quarterfinal loss in Marseille.

However, returning back to competitive tennis, Medvedev had a first round bye and then crushed both his first two opponents. A 6-4, 6-4 win against Marcos Giron was followed by a 6-3, 6-3 drubbing of Aljaz Bedene in the second, needing just 68 minutes in the latter encounter.

Bautista-Agut Overturns Opening Set Loss

Like Medvedev, Bautista-Agut also had a first round bye and then demolished fellow veteran tennis player Richard Gasquet in the second round, winning 7-5, 6-1.

In the second round, Bautista-Agut was faced with the challenge of Karen Khachanov, and he went on to overturn the loss of the first set to complete a bit of a shock win.

Bautista-Agut needed two hours and six minutes under the hot New York sun to beat the 11th seeded Khachanov, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The loss of the opening set did not seem to deter the Spaniard too much as he raced away to a 3-0 in the second set and followed it up with a 5-1 lead in the final set.

With this win, Bautista-Agut has now made it to the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open for the second time in a row and another win here would give him vital ranking points which could help him further up the rankings.

Daniil Medvedev v Roberto Bautista-Agut Prediction & Tip

While Bautista-Agut’s performances in both, this tournament and overall this season cannot be faulted – he was 6-0 at the ATP Cup earlier this year – he is up against a player who is tough to crack at the best of times. And that’s how it will remain with Medvedev expected to win another straight-setter.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
