Ons Jabeur v Katarzyna Kawa Head to Head

While these two have never played each other at the WTA circuit, they did feature in a match at the ITF level way back in 2014. Jabeur, playing in her home competition, had won that encounter on clay in straight sets.

Jabeur Hoping to Better Last Year’s Showing

Tunisia’s Jabeur returns to the site where things began to turn around for her. The world number 39 has been around the circuit for a few years and had made the 2017 French Open third round but her performances otherwise had been lacklustre at the highest level.

It was in 2019, at the US Open where she shot through to the third round of the US Open and seemed to have turned the corner. In her first round, Jabeur defeated the 27th seeded Caroline Garcia before getting past Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second to emulate her best ever showing at a Grand Slam.

While she lost to Karolina Pliskova in the third round, it wasn’t before she had won a set off her third seeded opponent.

Jabeur seems to have taken that confidence into 2020 as well as she became the first Arab woman to make it to the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam, achieving this at the Australian Open earlier this year. There were three other quarterfinals following that, at Doha, Lexington and the Western & Southern Open, and her win over Pliskova earlier this year in Doha is an indicator of how far she has come.

Kawa Made Her Maiden Final Last Season

With a career-best ranking of 121st, Kawa enters this encounter as an underdog, but after years on the circuit she did make it as far as the final of the Baltic Open last year. As a qualifier defeated the likes of Ysaline Bonaventure and Bernarda Pera before losing to Anastasija Sevastova in the title-decider.

Kawa had only just before that made it to the semifinal at Bastad but in multiple attempts of trying to make it to the main draw of Grand Slam competitions, she has never done it. Before this US Open that is where the withdrawals of multiple players has made it a lot easier for those on the fringe like the 125th-ranked Kawa to make the main draw.

The Pole had earlier this season entered the semifinal of an ITF event on hard court, but hasn’t played a competitive match since the return of tennis.

Ons Jabeur v Katarzyna Kawa Prediction & Tip

Jabeur should have no worries steamrolling her opponent with a straight-set win anticipated in this one. That said, we could be looking at an over games market given what’s on offer here.

Tip: Over 17.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
