Jennifer Brady v Anna Blinkova Head to Head

There has been one previous outing between Brady and Blinkova and the Russian had gotten the better of her opponent. The match came at the 2019 New Haven Open competition with Blinkova running away a 6-2, 6-1 winner in the quarterfinals.

Brady Suffers Shock Loss at Cincinnati Open

Jennifer Brady’s fine showing this season was building up to something special and sure enough it resulted in the American winning her first ever WTA title at the resumption of the tennis season. Playing at the Lexington Open, Brady thwarted the likes of Marie Bouzkova, Cori Gauff and Jil Teichmann to pocket that victory.

What made that win more special was Brady didn’t drop a single set en route the title, never losing more than four games in a set. It was as comprehensive as it could get.

And then, as she was expected to surprise a few at the Cincinnati Open too, Brady went out in the first round of the competition. She lost in straight sets to Jessica Pegula.

Given what’s gone on throughout the season for Brady – she was a quarterfinalist at the Brisbane International and a semifinalist in Dubai – that loss can be called a minor blip and there’s no reason to believe there’s been any fundamental change in the way we expect Brady to go. And that’s deep into the tournament.

Forgettable Season So Far for Blinkova

Other than winning two successive matches in an exhibition tournament on clay during the pandemic break, Blinkova hasn’t done that on the WTA tour all season. Not even in the qualifiers.

A second round appearance at the Australian Open has been Blinkova’s best showing this year but other than that she has made past the first round in only two other tournaments – the Shenzhen Open where she shocked Belinda Bencic in the first round and the Lexington Open recently, where Blinkova won against Kristie Ahn in her opener.

Other than that, losses have come thick and fast this season, a far cry from her showing last year when she also won her maiden WTA title. That win came in New Haven – at the same tournament she defeated Brady – and went well along with semifinal appearances at the Guangzhou Open and Luxembourg Open.

Unfortunately, it’s been a stunning turnaround for Blinkova this year.
