Andrey Rublev v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings between Rublev and Chardy and the Russian is leading 4-1. Chardy’s only win, incidentally, came at their last meeting which was at the 2018 US Open and in the first round too. Three of Rublev’s victories have been at the Challenger circuit.

Rublev Makes a Quiet Restart

Currently at his career-best ranking of 14th in the world, Rublev looked rusty in the first match he played since the resumption of tennis, losing a three-setter to Daniel Evans at the Cincinnati Open. Having made the quarterfinal of the same event last year, it would have resulted in the loss of ranking points but for the change in the ranking system this year.

That rustiness, however, can be expected. What it cannot take away from is Rublev’s record this year on hard court surfaces on which he has already won two titles.

The first came at the Qatar Open and he doubled up in the following tournament in Adelaide in the lead-up to the Australian Open. He also made it as far as the fourth round at the season’s first Grand Slam before falling to Alexander Zverev.

During the pandemic, Rublev featured in a couple of clay court tournaments, facing up to the likes of Zverev, Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini and finished with a 7-1 win-loss – underlining his purple patch.

So while that loss at the Western & Southern Open would be a dampener, Rublev has enough good experience under his belt this season to showcase a solid showing in this opener.

Chardy’s Played Just Six Matches This Year

While the rest of the top men’s tennis players were featuring in exhibition tournaments around the world even during the pandemic break, Chardy had opted not to and in turn had played a total of five matches heading into the Cincinnati Open.

As expected, it turned out to be a disaster for the Frenchman as he went down to the 100th-ranked Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets.

At the beginning of the season, Chardy had started off with a win in the opening round at Doha and Adelaide. Unfortunately in both those tournaments, he lost his second round matches and followed it up with a straight-set thrashing at the hands of David Goffin at the Australian Open.

With very little match time and even poorer form, it’s difficult to see Chardy get off to a winning start at this one.

Andrey Rublev v Jeremy Chardy Prediction & Tip

It should come as no surprise Chardy is a whopping 11/2 outsider in this one. It remains to be seen if he can push Medvedev and we think it might not happen with Rublev expected to win in straight sets.

Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
