Cecchinato Eyeing Top 100 Return

Marco Cecchinato made quite the splash in his breakout season in 2018 when he became the lowest-ranked French Open semi-finalist since 1999. He stunned the likes of Novak Djokovic and David Goffin among others, and he also collected two ATP titles that same year, in Budapest and Umag respectively.

Those brilliant results saw him break into the top-20 for the first time in his career, peaking at No.19. The man from Palermo then carried that momentum into the early part of 2019 season. Cecchinato reached the last four in Doha, and on the South American clay swing picked up his 3rd ATP tour title in Buenos Aires.

That was as good as it got for the Italian whose results for the remainder of the campaign were non-existent. He failed to defend his title in Budapest due illness, and finished the year with a terrible 20-28 win-loss record.

Cecchinato’s points during the first quarter of 2020 have since come off after making early exits in Doha and Buenos Aires, and he has dropped outside the top-100 for the first time in three years.

The 27-year-old has never won a match at the US Open in three previous visits.

Harris Holds South Africa’s Hopes in New York

Given Kevin Anderson’s seemingly difficult prospect of reaching the second round after drawing Germany’s fifth-seed Alexander Zverev whom he has never beaten in five meetings, South African hopes of a singles contestant in the next round may rest on the shoulders of Cape Town native Lloyd Harris.

The 23-year-old has a winnable opener against Italy’s out-of-form opponent Marco Cecchinato. In somewhat fortuitous circumstances, Harris finds himself as the highest-ranked South African in the draw, partly due to Kevin Anderson’s injury troubles in the last few seasons and his very own impressive rise on the senior tour.

A lot of work has been done at the Challenger level where he was a champion in Launceston last year, and he also scored his maiden Grand Slam main draw win at the French Open in 2019.

Harris has undergone an intensive training routine under coach Eitan Adams in the past four months in Cape Town as the Covid-19 pandemic halted tennis tournaments across the world.

Harris, like his opponent Cecchinato, is also seeking a maiden main draw win at the US Open.

Cecchinato v Harris Prediction & Tip

Cecchinato produces his best tennis on clay and hasn’t quite made his mark on hard courts throughout his career. With that said, he still possesses a ferocious first serve and that could earn him free points on the fast hard courts of New York. Harris on the other hand also possesses natural power and this is certainly a contest where rallies will be at a premium.
