Anna Kalinskaya v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head

This will be the second encounter between the two players in a competitive match. The pair met back in 2017 at the Batumi ITF semi-finals where Kalinskaya won in three sets.

Kalinskaya Still Looking to Get Past First Round this Season

After announcing herself at the world stage last year, the 21-year-old Russian has had a below-par season so far. She has taken part in five tournaments so far, failing to go past the first round of the main draw in any of them. Although in three of them she did manage to navigate through the qualifying stages the main draw win has alluded her so far.

The 2016, Australian doubles junior champion came into the limelight last year when she reached the semifinals at the Washington WTA. She followed it up with a shock upset when she knocked Sloane Stephens out of the US Open. This helped her break into the top 100 in the rankings as well.

Kalinskaaya is a versatile player who is comfortable on both the clay and the hard courts. A win here in the first round will match her last season’s performance at the Flushing Meadows. And an impressive run in New York will also take her into the top 100 once again.

Stojanovic Looking to Arrest a Downward Slide

The 24-year-old Serbian had a great 2019 season where she finished with an impressive win-loss record of 45-18. She balanced between playing the ITF and WTA events perfectly and ended up having a near-perfect year.

She won three lower-level tournaments and also reached the last eight stage at three WTA events. This phenomenal run meant that she reached as high as 87 in the world rankings after starting the 2019 season at 233.

But stepping up to playing mostly WTA events only hasn’t worked out for Stojanovic as she would have hoped. Just like her opponent, the Serbian is also looking for her first main draw win at a WTA event this year.

The closest she came to achieving that was in the first round at Hobart where she lost after being one set up against Kristyna Pilskova.

She has been failing to get to the main draw at the US Open for the past four years and whatever happens in the first round, this will be her best-ever showing at the tournament.

Anna Kalinskaya v Nina Stojanovic Prediction & Tip

Both the players haven’t won a main draw match at a WTA event this year. Whoever makes the fewer errors is likely to go through to the second round in a close contest. Just because of the fact that Kalinskaya has played more matches since the season resumed, she holds a slight edge.

Tip: Kalinaskaya to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
