Ekaterina Alexandrova v Kim Clijsters Head to Head

This will be a first matchup between the World No. 29 Alexandrova and wild card Clijsters, who had retired four years before Alexandrova made her WTA Tour singles debut, before making a surprising comeback in 2020.

Court Time, Age Favour Alexandrova

Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova is slowly becoming a dangerous player on the tour. Having reached the third rounds of the French Open, Indian Wells Open, China Open and the Canadian Open (her best ever displays in these tournaments) in 2019, she became the first champion on the tour in 2020, when she clinched the Shenzhen Open title in January by beating Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the final.

En route to her first ever WTA title, the 25-year-old Russian defeated China’s Wang Qiang in the quarterfinals and Garbine Muguruza in the semifinals. At the Australian Open, she matched her best-ever Grand Slam showing by reaching the third round, but couldn’t advance further after losing to Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

At the St Petersburg Open, she made it to the final four, but went down fighting against eventual champion Kiki Bertens. It was followed by a first-round exit from the Qatar Open before the lockdown.

Since resumption of tennis in August, Alexandrova has a 2-3 win-loss record from three tournaments.

The right-handed Russian, who has a 13-6 singles record in 2020, will look to regain her pre-lockdown touch in New York and continue to make an impact on the tour.

Uphill Task for Clijsters

She retired in 2007; then made a comeback in 2009 before retiring again in 2012. She stayed away from the sport for seven long years before deciding to make another comeback and just when she returned, the world decided to go on a break. For four-time major winner Kim Clijsters, it’s been a story of long breaks and anticipated comebacks.

Winner of the U.S. Open title in 2005, 2009 and 2010 and the Australian Open in 2011, Clijsters made a return to tennis in Dubai after a seven-year hiatus. Although she was beaten in the first round by Australian Open runner-up Muguruza in straight sets, the tennis world was pretty impressed by her game. She looked good in the first round of the Monterrey Open as well, but failed to take even a set off Johanna Konta.

The 37-year-old still looks competitive and has a desire to succeed but the tournament will be a massive physical test for the former World No. 1 and it would require a huge effort from the Belgian to go past the seeded first-round opponent.

Ekaterina Alexandrova v Kim Clijsters Prediction & Tip

If Clijsters is physically up for it, she will put up a fight, but expect the Russian to go through in a hard-fought two-setter.

Tip: Alexandrova to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
