Having gotten ousted in the first round of the US Open last season, Pera doesn’t have too many points to defend and a strong showing in this competition could put her in the top-50 reckoning. With a career-best of 59 just two spots above her current ranking, even a first round win here should help her emulate that ranking.
Pera would be hoping for a stronger run that, having shown signs of a sparkle at different times this season.
Twice at the start of the year, she was made to go through the rigmarole of the qualifiers and not only did she make the main draw but also made it to the second round with wins over Barbora Strycova and Caroline Garcia.
Then, drawn to play Serena Williams in the first round of the Lexington Open, Pera managed to grab a set off her before losing in three while making it to the second round at the Cincinnati Open as well.

Diyas Played Just One Match Since Lockdown
Since turning out for Kazakhstan in the Fed Cup earlier this February, Diyas hasn’t played any tennis at any level. No ITF, exhibition or WTA matches, till obviously she turned out at the Cincinnati Open qualifying round.
And lost 6-1, 6-3 to the 128th-ranked Ann Li.
That wouldn’t have done her confidence any good but realistically speaking, for a player to come out from a break this long would have always resulted in rustiness. And that showed in that opener but let’s not judge her by that result alone because of how her season had gone before that.
Before the tennis break, Diyas had begun her season at the Hong Kong ITF competition where she won the title before making it to the quarterfinal at the Shenzhen Open. And then as a cherry on top, she entered the third round at the Australian Open – her best Grand Slam performance since a similar appearance at Wimbledon in 2017.
If she can get into some rhythm. Diyas could trouble Pera here.
