Fritz Gets Into Groove After Early Setback

No. 19 seed Taylor Fritz began his U.S. Open campaign with 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over last year’s surprise package Dominik Koepfer in the first round on Monday.

Germany’s Koepfer, who reached the fourth round as a qualifier at Flushing Meadows last year, kept up with the power and pace of the 22-year-old American in an engaging first set, before wrapping it up in the tie-breaker.

Shaking off the early setback, the World No. 25 quickly got into his groove to overpower the 91st-ranked German in 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Son of Kathy May Fritz, a former top 10 women’s player and Guy Henry Fritz, a tennis player turned coach, Taylor struck 15 aces against the 26-year-old German in the first round.

The 2015 U.S. Open boys’ singles champion, Fritz has already played a Masters 500 final this year, finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Mexican Open in March.

He also reached the third round of the Australian Open this year after winning a marathon five-setter against Kevin Anderson in the second round, but he was stopped from advancing further by eventual runner-up Dominic Thiem.

Against Koepfer, Fritz hit 42 winners and won a total of 135 points to dominate the contest after losing the first set. He was disciplined with his serve, conceding just four double faults in the match, but would like to improve on the 39 unforced errors made during the course of four sets.

Fritz will next face the 35-year-old Simon, who looked in great touch as well in the first round.

Simon Storms into Second Round

World No. 52 Gilles Simon eased into the second round with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Egypt’s Mohamed Safwat.

In a match that lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes, Simon hit 10 aces, 28 winners and converted 5 of 10 break point opportunities.

A former World No. 6 and winner of 14 singles titles, Simon hit a total of 101 points in a dominant first-round performance.

A quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in 2009 and the Wimbledon in 2015, Simon is yet to go past the fourth round of the U.S. Open, having reached there twice in 2012 and 2014. Last year at this event, he retired against Andrey Rublev during their second-round clash.

This year, though, Simon is off to a good start and would be eager to build on that.

Taylor Fritz v Gilles Simon Prediction & Tip

It is expected to be an engrossing contest with the experienced Frenchman testing the youngster. However, given Fritz’s constant improvement over the last couple of years, he should win this in four.

Tip: Fritz to win in four sets: 2/1 (bet365)
