Pegula, A Major Dark-Horse

Buffalo-born Jessica Pegula showed early tennis promise as a preteen before fading into obscurity. But, everything seems to have clicked into place in the last two years.

The 26-year-old American was hit hard by knee and hip injuries in the last decade and had to watch as her ranking plummeted just when she was closing in on the top-100. Indeed, her journey since turning pro has been a long and arduous one, but it appears that all the hard work and dedication she has put in is finally paying off.

Pegula broke into the top-100 for the first time at the start of last season after capturing a WTA 125K crown in Newport and an ITF title in Michigan. Her biggest success to date was winning the Citi Open last August – her maiden WTA tour title. She rose to a new career-high ranking of no.55, but ended the year at no.82 in the world after registering a six-match losing streak.

The one-time WTA tour titlist has maintained her top-100 standing despite her lack of achievement at tennis’ pillar events. She made her second WTA final in Auckland earlier this year where she lost to Serena Williams. Her return to tennis after the pandemic-enforced break saw her lose in the second round at the Top Seed Open, before she performed with distinction at the Cincinnati Masters as a qualifier.

She beat Lexington champion Jennifer Brady, Amanda Anisimova and Aryna Sabalenka en route to the quarterfinals where lost to Elise Mertens.

Flipkens Upset No.32 Seed Peterson

Playing in her 18th season on the main tour, Kirsten Flipkens will attempt to reach the third round of the US Open for just the second time. It will certainly be a bittersweet moment for the Belgian veteran should it happen considering her reaction a couple of months ago at the US Open’s decision to hold the tournament.

Flipkens had voiced major concerns at the tournament organizers on social media and was against travelling to the US to compete due to the coronavirus pandemic. But thankfully, there has been a tremendous improvement in Covid-19 cases in New York and social distancing protocols being observed at the Grand Slam event.

The world no.72 scored an upset win over the no.32 seed Rebecca Peterson of Sweden in her opening round match. Flipkens was clutch on her break point opportunities. She also excelled in protecting her very own delivery, saving 12 out of 13 break points.

Her reward is a second round meeting against America’s in-form woman Jessica Pegula.

Pegula v Flipkens Prediction & Tip

This is the kind of match up that could worry Jessica Pegula due to the craftiness that Flipkens brings to the table. But the American just doesn’t look like missing at the moment when she lines up to hit the lines. Expect the Citi Open champion to make her progress into round three.

Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
