Aryna Sabalenka v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head
This is just the second match between these players from Belarus, and rather interestingly, their first encounter had come at the US Open last year. Sabalenka had won that in three sets to make the second round where she then lost to Yulia Putintseva.

While Sabalenka won her first round match in straight sets against Oceane Dodin, she was far from her best. As has been the case since her return to tennis after the pandemic break.
At the Lexington Open, which was her first competition since the tennis returned, Sabalenka needed three sets to get past Madison Brengle in her opener and then fell to Cori Gauff in the second.
Then again at the Cincinnati Open, she was stretched all the way to a 7-5 final set by Cici Bellis in the first round before falling to Jessica Pegula. And here at the US Open, she made 23 unforced errors, and while she had seven break-points, won just two of those points.
Where Sabalenka did gain advantage over her opponent was her returning, in which she won 33 of the 81 points. Can she improve on the other aspects of her game going up against a player who has recently shown her recent issues were a mere blip.

Azarenka’s Form Turnaround Continues to Impress
It has been a tale of two halves for Azarenka this season. The first, in which she lost in the first round at Monterrey, went down in a couple of matches at an exhibition tournament during the pandemic break and then a first round loss at the Lexington Open to Venus Williams.
The second part of this story came at the Cincinnati Open whereby she went on a kind of a dream run that culminated in Azarenka winning five matches in a row to make it to the final of the competition. And while the title win came as a result of Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal, her performances in the lead-up to that walkover were like a chip off those days when Azarenka won her Grand Slam titles.
In the first round at the US Open on Tuesday, Azarenka was at her best again, warding off Barbara Haas with consummate ease, winning 6-1, 6-2 to seal her second round berth. And now, while she faces a tennis challenge tougher than most in recent times, she will have the weapons and confidence ready.
