Jeffrey John Wolf v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the Noumea Challenger event in New Caledonia in January this year. Wolf won that match in three sets.

Wolf Makes Main Draw for the First Time…and Wins!

Wolf only turned professional last year, after playing college tennis for Ohio State, where he was named Freshman of the Year, and was the number one ranked college player in the US.

Since then he has spent most of his time on the Challenger tour, where he has enjoyed great success, reaching five finals, and winning four of them, including two in 2020 prior to lockdown – in Noumea and Columbus.

This is his first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam. He was given a wildcard into the qualifiers here in New York in 2017, but failed to win a set, and was knocked out in the second round of qualifying in Melbourne in January.

However, he qualified for the Cincinnati Open before losing to Richard Gasquet in the first round, and secured one of the biggest wins of his professional career to date by upsetting Guido Pella of Argentina, the world number 38 in four sets on Tuesday to reach the second round.

Carballes Baena Needs to Bring Clay Form to US Open

27-year-old Carballes Baena has reached the second round in New York for the second time, having also reached this stage in 2018. He has never been further at any Grand Slam event.

A clay court specialist, he has one senior ATP title to his name, the 2018 Ecuador Open, when he beat compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas in the final.

He also won the Chile Open doubles this year, partnered by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Like his opponent, he has also enjoyed a fair share of success on the Challenger tour, where he has made ten finals, winning seven of them. However, all of those were on clay and he tends to struggle on other surfaces.

Carballes Baena was, however, able to beat fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the first round on Tuesday, coming from behind to beat the 38-year-old veteran in four sets.

Jeffrey John Wolf v Roberto Carballes Baena Prediction & Tip

Wolf will start favourite for this match because it is being played on hard courts, and Carballes Baena is very much a clay court specialist. The American won their previous meeting – again on a hard court – and should do so again.

Tip: Wolf to win in four sets: 11/2 (bet365)
