Maria Sakkari v Bernarda Pera Head to Head
There has been one previous meeting between Sakkari and Pera and that came at the first round of the 2019 Wimbledon. Sakkari had won that match in straight sets.

Sakkari was an overwhelming favourite heading into her first round match against Stefanie Voegele with bookmakers offering 4/1 for her opponent’s win. Strangely though, Sakkari found it rather tough to overcome her Swiss opponent, winning in three sets.
In a match of fluctuating fortunes, things looked to be headed Sakkari’s way when she won the first set but Voegele broke her immediately in the second set to race off to a 3-0 lead. Sakkari levelled things off by winning the next three games but then lost the three after that to lose the set.
The final set was a hard-fought one. Sakkari faced multiple break points but thwarted them all while but off the first match-point she got on Voegele’s serve at 5-6, the Greek clinched the encounter.
Sakkari was coming off a quarterfinal appearance at the Cincinnati Open before this where she lost to Johanna Konta. Up against her in the second round is a player inching towards her career-best ranking of 59th.

Pera Blitzes Past Diyas
It was expected to be a tough encounter and the first set seemed like it was headed that way when Pera fell behind 0-3 in the first set. The American then rallied back to take a 4-3 lead, going from a break down to a break up, before Diyas broke back to level proceeding at 4-4.
Four more breaks of serve followed, which included three set-points for Pera which she squandered and the set went into the tie-breaker. Here Pera was quicker off the blocks and completed a 7-4 win to take the set.
And just as the neutral was gearing up to what might have gone on to become a thriller, Pera just ran away with the contest. She broke Diyas three more times to complete a 7-6, 6-0 win and seal a place in the round two.
Pera had earlier made Serena Williams’ life difficult in a first round match at the Lexington Open and has already beaten a top-10 player once in her career – it came at the 2018 Australian Open where she reached the third round beating Johanna Konta.
